Tender Mercy Time

Half of Teopisca
Hello wonderful people.

Something great about Teopisca is at this time of year everyone makes calavasa dulce.... which tastes like sweet potatoes. So I ate sweet potatoes for Thanksgiving, even though I didn't realize it was Thanksgiving until black Friday. WOO!

Well this was a week of TENDER MERCIES (finally something different than miracles hahaha). It all started out with two of the completely golden families we had...being not so golden... and rejecting us completely. Both incidents happened in front of the joven we supposedly are getting excited for the mission.... yeah that should get him excited.

We caught the first family running to a Christian festival instead of coming to church. Cool. The other family told us even if our message is true it doesn't matter because they are Catholics. Whatevs.

To top it all off the only two baptisms we have for this transfer fell through because their dad talked them out of it and now won't give them permission. Unfortunately, now the kids don't want much to do with us. Needless to say we were feeling a little down. But, we ended up going to a lesson Saturday night that changed everything.

Las Hermanas de zonas San Cristobal, Comitan, y Chojolo.

Picture this.

A cold, freezing guera and her companion walk into the last appointment of the night at 8pm. She's extra freezing because she fell in San Cristobal and her favorite gray tights ripped. So the only thing she has to keep her warm is her sweater and her leg hair.

She walks in to the cold cement room, stepping around the giant ant infested Eeyore stuffed animal that has been left outside for the past week. Avoiding the dish of hot coals in the middle of the room, she steps on an old tortilla. The crunch almost wakes up the three little ones huddled together, sleeping on the floor, trying to keep warm without a mattress.

Pumpkins growing on the roof

She sits down on the tiny wooden chair. Her companion asks if they read the pamphlet. They had read it and they even prayed. It's a miracle! They are spiritually prepared to receive the message we have brought.

We sing "Away in a Manger" ever so quietly, so as not to wake up the children. They like it. They feel the Spirit. As the lesson goes forward, they understand for the first time, everything. In spite of their little education (because their mom left them as kids and their dad died when they were ten), they are answering questions. They are single moms, 19 and 21. They were never taught moral values because they didn't have parents. But they understand how a prophet can bless their lives.

Then, it's time for the First Vision. Their eyes follow the picture. The Spirit fills the room as I use the same words Joseph Smith used. God converts us into instruments of the Spirit, and at the end of the message, their eyes have changed. There is light in them. They try to express how they are feeling, but they can't. They have never felt it before.

She says, "It feels a little like when my son was born."

The cold can't penetrate the Spirit that is felt. They promise to come to church the next day, and prepare for baptism in January. They came, and they are preparing.

Warming my feet by the heater...cause it's cold!
It's a wonderful life!!!!

Holaaaaaaaaaa! Pimienta!!

Hermanas Hansen y Yorgason with Elders Carreon y Brass

Holaaaaaaaaaa!

So something different about Pimienta... it's much more affluent. Like a lot more rich people... and it's funny because some of them have a whole different accent that I like to make fun of. It also means they use 'pues' less, which I find to be very un-chapanecan.  And they eat less tortillas here, and use more forks and knives (don't worry, I still remember how to use them... kind of). Weird how the city can change, and I'm only 20 minutes away from my old area!!

One thing that is NOT SO COOL is our house here.... is super chafa (but it's worth it because we have a washing machine and hot water.... Capacitadora perks). And we have found a cockroach in our house about every day since I've gotten here. Luckily, Hermana Yorgason is pro at killing them....

Gross shower...but we have hot water & a washer so I'm not complaining!

We also had our first round of intercambios (exchanges) this week! We went to Palmas and did a SUPER SPLASH. Where we both worked in their area to help them boost up the animo and find some new investigators.

Hermanas Allen & Hansen

I went with Hermana Allen and it was tons of fun. She's a super great missionary and I learned a lot from her example. We had a blast talking Spanglish all day and contacting UN BUEN. At the end of the day, between all four of us we contacted over 70 people in the street. We even found a few new investigators! It was super fun. Being a capacitadora is great!!

Surprise Slumber Party with Hermana Martinez and her companion!

We also had our leadership meeting. On Monday night, at 9:30, four Hermanas from Tapachula showed up at our house looking for a place to sleep!! One of them being... HERMANA MARTINEZ ME MAMA!!!! So we had a surprise slumber party and it was great!!

Hermanas reunited!

We found a miracle this week....Hermanito R. He's a niño de 8 años who has been coming to church activities, playing futbol in the parking lot, and even coming to church on Sunday (sometimes) for years!! He is the sweetest thing ever and we started teaching him this week. He's so smart!

We asked him if he wanted to get baptized and he said, "Well, I do...but I got baptized when I was a baby in the Catholic church and I don't want to play games with God. Baptism is a serious thing.

Hermanas Hansen & Juliana

We just blinked at him and were like, "Wow. Exactly... Yes it is!"
So we explained to him about the priesthood, and how he needs this permission from God to be baptized correctly. At the end of the lesson, he said, "I want to say the prayer! I need to ask God for permission!"

So in his prayer,  he said, "Padre Celestial... te damos gracias por las hermanas... y te pido que tu puedes dar mi permiso para bautizarme en tu verdadera iglesia, en el nombre de jesucristo, Amen."  (Heavenly Father...thank you for the Sisters...and I ask that you give me permission to be baptized in the true church... In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.)

As we all knelt down, we felt the spirit SO STRONG. There was no denying it. I asked Hermanito R., "How do you feel?"

He said, "Like something warm is inside of me. I feel like God's giving me permission."

At dinner with a few of our ward members

It was an amazing experience. I was astonished that a little 8 year old boy could bring the spirit in so strong and get an answer. But it was a testimony strengthener to me that we are all children of God.  He ALWAYS answers our prayers...no matter how simple...if we pray with real intent.

Mango Party!!

That's all for now, Pimienta is THE BOMB.

Love you all!!!!!

God is ALWAYS Looking Out For Us

HOLA!

Life in Mexico is loud as always! Music everywhere, people shouting gringa or guera (white girl or blondie) at me everywhere, traffic noises, dog and bird noises.... EVERYWHERE.  City life is fab.

Traffic here is absolutely insane. There are no rules. You just GO. Seatbelts are usually nonexistent, along with lanes, crosswalks, and speed limits. So, when we cross the street, it's in the middle of traffic...dodging cars and buses and combis. (Mom, you would die. hahaha) It's SO FUN.

Our area is huge and we walk miles and miles every day. It's insane. When we need to, we either take the bus, or more commonly combis. These are little van-like things that a bunch of people cram in...to scramble around from place to place (Again mom, you would die).

You would think the cat calls and American comments would stop after awhile...but no! But don't worry... it's all positive....sorta!

This week:
People who stroked my hair = 9
Commented on my blue eyes = 11
Stroked my skin = 6
Shouted gringa, guera, or something else at me = too many to count.

The only bad response I've gotten was yesterday.....I've debated sharing this story because I'm pretty sure mom's gonna have a heart attack but....it shows that God really does watch out for his missionaries and I'm just fine so..... HERE WE GO.

Yesterday, as we were walking through Central to eat at a members house I felt like someone was following us. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed this short man in an orange shirt who seemed to be looking at me.

So, I started walking faster. And so did he.

I said to Hermana Martinez, "Mas rapido"(faster).  She was confused. But, as we started walking faster...he noticed and started screaming things at us.

Hermana Martinez looked alarmed and said, "Don't worry." When she speaks in english, you know it's serious...because she doesn't speak much English....and only does when she doesn't want other people to understand her.

So we crossed the street...probably when we shouldn't have...dodging cars...and started running to the member's house. He got caught up at the road. We started knocking on the members door. But, as we were waiting he caught up to us.

He screamed, "No quiero gringas aqui!!!" (I don't want gringas here!!) And raised his hand in the air....like he was about to hit me!

We just stared at him in shock.

Then, the weirdest thing happened. He just lowered his hand, looked confused, and walked away. For no reason. It had to have been the spirit! It honestly was like God put His hand forward to stop his hand. I'm not kidding. I swear there was like a wall between us.

God is always looking out for us. What a miracle!

There have been other miracles that I have seen here. I know God prepares His people for us.

The first week I was taking a picture of this ginormus chicken when a lady walked out and just randomly invited us in. She was indiginous, and when we asked her why she invited us in she said because I was so smiley, a gringa.... and we all just looked so happy. She is now a progressing investigador!

Another time, all of our lessons fell through. So, we were just walking around with a member...when we stumbled upon this house of inactive members that no one knew about, along with two new investigators. One of the inactive members said we were an answer to her prayers! She prayed to have the missionaries come to her door if the church was true, and we showed up the next day.

I know God prepares his children!!!

So in our mission an investigator has to attend church 5 times before baptism because there are a lot of less actives or in-actives here.  But, if all goes as planned we should have 3 baptisms this week! Woohoo!!

Love you and miss you all a ton!!!!!

Con Amor,

Hermana Hansen

(Note from parents:  Jordyn wanted us to pass along thanks for the many emails / letters she has been receiving.  She doesn't have time to respond to everybody each week but know that she loves and appreciates the prayers and support)
